Check Engine Light Diagnostics

Retrieve Data

We use a full-functioning tool to perform an analysis of the onboard computer system. This allows us to collect the following information:

• Computer codes
• Freeze frame data
• Computer software version numbers
• Critical sensor data
• Status information

Pulling the code does not generally supply enough detail to make an accurate diagnosis of the problem. This is just the first step of the process. It lets us identify the circuit or system that has illuminated on your vehicle's dash.

Verification Testing

Verification tests allow us to see if the system meets proper specifications. Our tests look at:

• Engine vacuum and backpressure
• Mechanical engine timing
• Electrical engine timing
• Ignition system
• Fuel system
• Emissions system

A failure in any of these basic systems can trigger the check engine light and falsely identify a circuit or component as the problem. Without proper verification, this can lead to improper or unnecessary parts replacement.

Pinpoint Testing

Every manufacturer requires testing for pinpoint testing on the circuit or component. This can ensure absolute diagnostic determination. This testing could include:

• Working through wiring diagrams
• Performing electrical test
• Performing mechanical tests
• Performing bi-direction control tests
• Visual inspections of suspect areas

Research Technical Service Bulletins

Manufacturers will release technical service bulletins and hotline information if the problem is part of an established pattern of failure. In other words, some issues are known to occur with certain vehicles.

This does not eliminate the need for testing, however. Other systems must meet specifications before a service bulletin procedure should be performed.

Car Repair

Once we know the specific things that need to be fixed, we'll complete the repairs. This could include:

• Parts replacement
• Cleaning of passages, connections, and other components
• Performing technical service bulletin updates from the manufacturer
• Updating the vehicle's computer software
• Wiring repair or replacement

Verify Repair

Once we perform all necessary actions to address the problem, we'll take things the extra step. We'll test the vehicle again to ensure that the repair is complete and that we have achieved the proper results for you and your vehicle.
